HVAC Rebates & Tax Credits in Texas: What to Know

Gustavo Garza, owner of Lexany's Heating & ACGustavo Garza

A high-efficiency heating or cooling system costs more up front, and the good news is that a few programs can soften that number. The tricky part is that the rules change from year to year and vary by household, so this guide explains what’s generally out there, how to confirm it, and where we can and can’t help. We install the equipment — we are not tax advisors — and we’ll always tell you to verify the specifics before you count on them.

Why rebates and tax credits matter when you upgrade

Most Forney homeowners only replace an AC or furnace every 12 to 15 years, so it’s easy to miss that the federal government and some utilities reward stepping up to higher-efficiency equipment. Used well, a credit or rebate can shrink the gap between a standard system and a more efficient one — sometimes enough to make the better unit the smarter buy. The catch is that none of it is automatic, and none of it should be assumed before the work is done.

The federal 25C tax credit

Under current federal law, the 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit can cover a percentage of the cost of qualifying high-efficiency equipment, up to annual caps. As of this writing, that can mean up to roughly $2,000 for a qualifying heat pump and up to roughly $600 for a qualifying high-efficiency central air conditioner in a given year.

Two things matter here. First, the equipment has to meet the efficiency thresholds in effect for the year you install it — not every system qualifies. Second, amounts, caps and eligibility rules change, so treat the figures above as general guidance, not a guarantee. Always confirm the current rules with a tax professional or at irs.gov and energystar.gov.

We’re not your tax advisor

We can tell you the efficiency ratings of the equipment we install and hand you an itemized invoice, but whether you actually qualify for a credit depends on your tax situation and the law in force that year. Confirm it with a tax professional before you rely on it.

Local utility rebates

Separate from anything federal, your local electric utility may offer its own rebates on high-efficiency HVAC equipment. In much of our service area that provider is Oncor, and utilities sometimes run seasonal programs that put money back on the table for qualifying systems. We won’t quote you a specific rebate amount, because these programs and their dollar figures change and aren’t ours to promise.

The practical move is simple: before you commit to a system, check your utility’s current offers directly, and tell us what you find. If a particular efficiency tier unlocks a rebate, that can help us steer the equipment choice toward something that both fits your home and earns the credit.

Higher efficiency lowers running costs

Rebates and credits are one-time help. The quieter, longer-lasting benefit of a more efficient system is on every electric bill. In a Texas climate where the AC runs much of the year, a higher-rated system simply uses less power to keep your home comfortable, and over a decade of Kaufman County summers that adds up. When you weigh a high-efficiency unit, look at the full picture — the up-front price, minus any credit or rebate you confirm, against the lower running cost over the life of the system. Our SEER savings calculator can help you sketch that out, and our guide to SEER2 explains what the ratings actually mean.

How the programs compare

Here’s the short version of what each path may cover and, just as important, how you confirm it before you spend a dime expecting it.

Program
What it may cover
How to confirm
Federal 25C tax credit
A percentage of qualifying high-efficiency equipment, up to annual caps
A tax professional, plus irs.gov & energystar.gov
Local utility rebate
A possible rebate on qualifying efficient systems (varies by program)
Your electric provider (such as Oncor) — current offers
Lower running costs
Less power used every month the system runs
Our SEER savings calculator and your past bills

None of these is a sure thing until you’ve checked the current rules, and the amounts above are general — the specific dollars for your home and your tax year depend on the current rules and your situation — confirm with energystar.gov, irs.gov, or a tax professional, and we’ll point you to what applies at the time of your install.

HVAC rebate and tax-credit FAQs

Will I definitely qualify for the federal tax credit?

We can’t promise that — eligibility depends on the equipment, your tax situation and the rules in effect for the year you install. We’re HVAC contractors, not tax advisors, so we’ll point you to the equipment’s efficiency ratings and recommend you confirm the current credit with a tax professional or at irs.gov and energystar.gov before counting on it.

Does Lexany handle the rebate or credit paperwork for me?

We’ll give you the documentation you need — the model numbers, efficiency ratings and an itemized invoice — so you or your tax preparer can claim what you’re entitled to. The filing itself goes through your tax return or your utility’s program, not through us.

Are there rebates available in the Forney area?

Your local electric utility (such as Oncor in much of our area) may offer rebates on high-efficiency equipment, but programs and amounts change. We’ll tell you what equipment tends to qualify, and you’ll want to check current offers directly with your provider before you decide.

How do I get started?

Call us at 469-728-7113. We’ll look at your home, talk through efficiency options that fit your budget, and give you the paperwork to chase down any credits or rebates — most days we can come out the same day.
