How to Control Indoor Humidity and Help Your AC Run Better

In a Forney summer, two homes set to the same 74 degrees can feel completely different — one crisp and comfortable, the other clammy and stuffy. The difference is almost always humidity. When the air inside your home holds too much moisture, it feels hotter than the thermostat reads, and your AC ends up working harder for a result you can’t even feel. Here’s why that happens, the range to aim for, and the fixes that genuinely help.

Why humidity makes a Texas home feel hotter

Your body cools itself by evaporating sweat off your skin. When the air around you is already loaded with moisture, that evaporation slows down — so even at a perfectly reasonable thermostat setting, you feel warm and sticky. It’s the same reason 95 degrees in dry Arizona feels different from 95 degrees in humid Kaufman County.

That has a direct cost. When the air feels muggy, the natural reaction is to push the thermostat lower and lower chasing comfort. A simple, inexpensive hygrometer (humidity gauge) from any hardware store lets you actually see where your home sits instead of guessing. If yours reads in the 60s during a humid week, that’s your signal — not a higher AC bill.

How an oversized AC works against you

This is the one most homeowners are surprised by: when it comes to air conditioning, bigger is not better. An AC that’s too large for the home cools the air fast, satisfies the thermostat, and shuts off — a pattern called short-cycling. It sounds efficient, but it’s the opposite of what you want for humidity.

Here’s the reason. Your AC removes moisture by passing warm, humid air across a cold evaporator coil; water condenses on that coil and drains away, the same way it beads on a cold glass of iced tea. But that only works if the air keeps moving across a cold coil for a while. An oversized unit that runs in short bursts cools the air before it has spent enough time pulling moisture out — so you get cold, still-humid air and a home that feels clammy.

A correctly sized system runs in longer, steadier cycles. It keeps the coil cold and wet while air moves across it, which is exactly the condition that dehumidifies. That’s why sizing matters more than brand for comfort, and why we measure the home rather than just matching whatever was there before. Two-stage and variable-speed equipment take this further — they run at a lower capacity for longer stretches, spending more time dehumidifying, which feels noticeably better in a humid climate.

Set the fan to AUTO, not ON

Leaving the blower set to ON runs the fan even when the AC isn’t cooling.
