Shopping for a new system, or even just reading the yellow sticker on the one you’ve got, can feel like a different language. SEER2, HSPF2, AFUE, MERV — it’s a pile of letters and numbers that nobody explains. So let’s fix that. Here’s the alphabet soup in plain English, and how each Texas season actually leans on your system once you know what the numbers mean.
Why so many ratings say “seasonal”
Notice how often the word seasonal shows up — the “S” in SEER2 and HSPF2 both stand for it. That’s the whole idea behind the modern ratings. An older measurement might tell you how efficient a system is on one perfect test bench at one temperature. But your air conditioner doesn’t run at one temperature. It runs through a long, brutal Forney July, a mild April, and everything in between. A “seasonal” rating averages efficiency across a realistic range of conditions, so the number reflects how the system actually behaves over a real season — not just at its best moment.
That matters here more than most places. Because our cooling season runs so long, a system’s seasonal efficiency has a lot of hours to add up, for better or worse.
The terms, in plain English
Here’s each one, what it measures, and the catch worth knowing.
SEER2 — how efficiently it cools
SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2) measures how much cooling you get per unit of electricity across a season. Higher is more efficient. The “2” is the 2023 testing update, which puts the equipment through conditions closer to a real home’s ductwork — so a SEER2 number reads a little lower than the old SEER number for the same gear. Don’t compare an old SEER figure against a new SEER2 figure; you’re comparing two different tests.
HSPF2 — how efficiently a heat pump heats
HSPF2 (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor 2) is the winter counterpart for heat pumps — how much heat you get per unit of electricity over a heating season. If you run a heat pump, this is the number that shows up on your winter bill. SEER2 covers its summer; HSPF2 covers its winter. Same “2” update applies.
AFUE — how much of your gas becomes heat
AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is for gas furnaces. It’s a percentage: how much of the fuel you burn actually becomes heat in your house versus going up the flue. A 95% AFUE furnace turns 95 cents of every fuel dollar into warmth. Higher is better, and on a furnace it’s a straightforward number to read.
MERV — how much your filter catches
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rates a filter, not the equipment. A higher MERV catches finer particles — dust, pollen, pet dander. But there’s a real catch: a denser filter also restricts airflow. Go higher than your system was built to handle and you choke the blower, raise your bill, and can freeze the coil. The goal is the best filtration your system can comfortably breathe through, not the highest number on the shelf.
Whenever you see SEER2 or HSPF2 next to an older SEER or HSPF number, treat them as two different yardsticks. The 2023 test is tougher, so the new number looks lower for the same equipment. Only compare a SEER2 to another SEER2.

Summer — the long, brutal one
This is the season your SEER2 earns or wastes its money. The AC runs for months, often most of the day, against triple-digit heat. A high SEER2 system has the most hours to pay you back here. What’s a good SEER2 rating for a home in Texas?
There’s a federal minimum that new systems have to meet, and most homeowners in our area land somewhere in the mid-to-upper range above that — a balance of upfront cost against the long Texas cooling season. Because our summers are so long, a higher SEER2 has more hours each year to pay you back here than it would in a cooler state. The right number depends on your home and budget, and that’s a conversation worth having before you buy.
Why did SEER become SEER2 and HSPF become HSPF2?
In 2023 the testing standards were updated to measure systems under conditions closer to a real home’s ductwork and static pressure, so the “2” versions are a tougher, more realistic test. The practical effect for you is that you can’t compare an older SEER number directly against a new SEER2 number — a SEER2 figure will look a little lower for the same equipment, even though nothing got worse. Compare like with like.
Does a higher MERV filter always mean better air?
